The Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers of New Jersey (ACDL – NJ) presented Edwin H. Stern, of counsel at Gibbons P.C., with the Honorable Lawrence A. Whipple Memorial Award at its annual installation reception at the Pleasantdale Chateau in May, 2014. He is the third Gibbons lawyer to earn this prestigious award, joining past recipients John J. Gibbons and Lawrence S. Lustberg.

The Whipple Award is presented annually to a member of the New Jersey bar who exemplifies professionalism and a passion for the law. The ACDL – NJ is an organization that was formed to respond to the continuing problems confronting criminal defense lawyers in their efforts to protect and ensure compliance with individual constitutional rights.

Mr. Stern began his judicial career in 1981, when he was appointed to the bench by then-governor Brendan T. Byrne. He served in the Superior Court Law Division in Hudson County and Essex County before he was elevated to the Appellate Division in 1985. In 1998, he became a presiding judge in the Appellate Division and, in 2004, the presiding judge for administration of the appellate division. He was temporarily assigned to the New Jersey Supreme Court from September 8, 2010 through June 9, 2011. During his judicial career, he authored more than 3,600 written decisions and more than 400 published opinions.

Leveraging his judicial experience, he now provides opinions for clients on various issues of concern, advises on such matters as filing appeals, reviews briefs and papers filed in state and federal courts, and conducts moot courts for attorneys before they argue matters in court. He also conducts mediations and arbitrations and serves as a special hearing officer in attorney discipline cases. He is on the roster of arbitrators for the American Arbitration Association.

Mr. Stern presently serves as a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Judicial Conduct, which reviews disciplinary complaints against judges, and the Civil Practice Committee, which recommends changes to the rules of civil and appellate practice and procedure governing the courts of the state of New Jersey.  On the national stage, Mr. Stern remains a member of the Council of Chief Judges of State Courts of Appeal, an active elected member of the American Law Institute, a member of the American Bar Association, and a fellow of the American Bar Foundation.
