Letter From The President Of The National Association Of Women Lawyers

To The Readers Of The Metropolitan Corporate Counsel:

The National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL) is one of our nation's best kept secrets! NAWL is a voluntary legal professional organization that was founded in 1899, long before women were admitted to the bar, and has been working tirelessly for women lawyers and women's rights ever since. As the general counsel of Deb Shops, Inc., I find the resources of NAWL to be invaluable in my practice and enthusiastically support its commitment to helping women lawyers to advance their careers.

NAWL has a strong educational and professional development component. This fall we would especially like to urge experienced in-house attorneys (men and women) to attend the First Annual Women Lawyers General Counsel Institute, which will be held in New York City on November 7 and 8. The General Counsel Institute is designed to increase an attorney's effectiveness with the organization and to build top-level managerial skills. As president of NAWL, I often tell people, that if you want to advance within the corporation, technical skills are not enough. We are really excited about this program and what it offers to attendees to help them advance their careers.

The General Counsel Institute opens with a plenary session moderated by attorney/director Vilma S. Martinez entitled "What the Corporate Board Expects from the General Counsel," featuring William Seidman, former FDIC Chairman, and other national experts.

Richard Bernard, General Counsel, New York Stock Exchange; Michael Cherkasky, CEO, Marsh, and Beth Levine, General Counsel, Pharmaceuticals, Pfizer, will discuss "The Role of the General Counsel When the Corporation is in Crisis." Deputy Mayor Carol Rubles-Romano will deliver a keynote speech, "Women and Leadership," and there will be several workshops on Presenting Yourself as a Leader; Best Practices for Networking Inside the Company; Difficult Discussions at Work and Negotiating for Yourself.

These are knowledgeable, compelling speakers, and we are already receiving reservations for the program. We're holding the General Counsel Institute in cooperation with The Directors' Council and several other corporate and bar group sponsors. Attorneys can find out more about the program and register on line at www.nawl.org. Any questions can be directed to NAWL headquarters at (312) 988-6186.
