John H. Estey, chief of staff to Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell from 2003 to 2007 and later senior adviser to the governor, left government service on February 15 to join Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP as a partner, leading a new Government Relations & Regulatory Affairs Practice that will serve as a strategic partner to business clients nationwide in their interactions with state government, Ballard Chairman Arthur Makadon announced.
Mr. Makadon said that Mr. Estey was the ideal candidate to marshal the firm's significant government relations capabilities. "We expect him to play a large role in the future of the firm representing important clients and managing key client relationships in the government relations area," Mr. Makadon said.
Mr. Estey, who will be based in Ballard's Philadelphia office, concentrates his practice in the areas of general business and corporate law and government relations. He was a partner at the firm from January 2002 through January 2003 before joining Gov. Rendell's administration in Harrisburg.
Mr. Estey will continue to serve as chairman of the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority and as the governor's designee as chairman of the Delaware River Port Authority.
Lawyers from each of the firm's 11 offices will be part of the Government Relations Practice.
On January 25, the Baltimore office of Ballard Spahr hosted the law firm's national partnership meeting, the first time the 122-year-old firm held its annual meeting outside of Philadelphia, where the firm was founded in 1886. "We have grown far beyond our Philadelphia roots and it was time to acknowledge, in a very public way, that we are a national firm," said Ballard Chairman Arthur Makadon. More than 200 partners from Ballard's 11 offices throughout the U.S. traveled to Baltimore for the annual event. Ballard partners were welcomed to the Baltimore meeting by Douglas F. Gansler, attorney general of Maryland.
John Delli Venneri has joined Ballard's Voorhees, NJ office as partner in its Litigation Department and Product Liability and Mass Tort Group. Mr. Delli Venneri focuses his practice on complex commercial litigation with particular emphasis on products liability and mass torts, as well as representation of foreign clients.
