Holland & Knight LLP has announced that Peter Prieto has been appointed the next Section Leader of the firm's national Litigation Section by Holland & Knight Managing Partner Howell W. Melton Jr.
The appointment will take effect in January 2008. Mr. Prieto will succeed Richard Duvall of the firm's Washington, DC and Northern Virginia offices who has served as Litigation Section Leader for Holland & Knight since 2003.
With approximately 430 lawyers, Holland & Knight's Litigation Section is one of the largest practices in the country. The Section is comprised of trial and appellate lawyers throughout the firm, and includes former judges, prosecutors and regulatory officers. The Section includes 16 different practice groups and handles a wide range of regional, national and international litigation matters.
Mr. Duvall has been asked to lead the firm's Government Contracts practice and to co-chair the Government Contracts Industry Team.
Mr. Prieto has served as executive partner of the firm's Miami office for the past six years and is co-chair of the firm's national White Collar Defense Team. A former federal prosecutor with significant trial experience, Mr. Prieto practices in the areas of complex civil litigation and white collar criminal defense. He has represented clients, including Fortune 500 companies, in a wide array of civil litigation.
Steven B. Nesmith has joined Holland & Knight's Washington, DC office as a partner in the firm's Public Policy & Regulation Group. Mr. Nesmith concentrates his practice on affordable housing and housing finance issues; new market, low-income housing and historic preservation tax credits; state and local government representation; renewal communities and empowerment zones; international trade and economic development; and post-Katrina redevelopment. He has extensive experience with housing, banking, financial services and international trade issues before Congress.
Mr. Nesmith served as assistant secretary for congressional and intergovernmental relations in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development from 2002-2005.
Todd Butler has joined Holland & Knight's Atlanta office as a partner in the firm's Corporate/M&A Group. Mr. Butler focuses his corporate law practice in the area of mergers and acquisitions with an emphasis on the design, financing and implementation of shareholder exit strategies, particularly Leveraged Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs).
