Ballard Names Two To HeadEnergy And Project Finance Group

Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP has announce that Howard H. Shafferman and R. Thomas Hoffmann have been appointed co-heads of the firm's Energy and Project Finance Group.

Ballard's Energy and Project Finance Group includes 32 lawyers and has a strong national and international reputation for its innovative work. The group represents project developers, underwriters, issuers and banks in developing, financing, restructuring and acquiring projects in energy production, environmental facilities and transportation.

Mr. Hoffmann is a partner in the Business & Finance Department in Ballard's Washington, DC office. His practice focuses on energy industry transactions, including project development, investments, finance, and mergers and acquisitions.

Mr. Shafferman is also a partner in Ballard's Business and Finance Department in the firm's Washington, DC office. His practice focuses on energy regulatory and transactional matters. He is regulatory counsel for ISO New England Inc., among other representations.

John P. Lavelle Jr., partner in the Ballard Litigation Department and partner-in-charge of the Product Liability and Mass Tort Group, authored a chapter in the soon to be released book, Inside the Minds: Product Liability Risks, published by Asaptore Books. This book, whose primary audience is senior level executives, contains authoritative insiders' perspectives on issues involved in defending companies against liability claims. In his chapter, Anticipate Exposure, Minimize Risk, Vigorously Defend, Mr. Lavelle presents winning strategies to avoid litigation claims, defend companies and understand regulatory proceedings.

Alan Kaplinsky, a senior partner and chair of Ballard's Consumer Financial Services Group, has been elected to membership in the American Law Institute. Each year, ALI selects a limited number of accomplished lawyers, law professors or judges to be offered membership based on professional accomplishment and contribution to ALI's mission to promote the clarification and simplification of the law. Mr. Kaplinsky devotes his practice exclusively to: counseling financial institutions with respect to bank regulatory and transactional matters, particularly consumer financial services law, and defending financial institutions that have been sued by consumers and governmental enforcement agencies in individual and class action lawsuits.

Ballard Spahr recently welcomed Gina Maisto Smith to its White Collar Litigation Group and Litigation Department. An 18-year veteran of the Philadelphia District Attorney's office, Ms. Smith most recently served as assistant district attorney, Homicide Division. Over the course of her career, Smith has prosecuted more than 100 jury trials and thousands of bench trials and was responsible for the investigation, preparation and prosecution of a wide range of high profile criminal cases.

Ballard Spahr recently welcomed trademark attorneys Stacey J. Johnson and Tricia McDermott Thompkins to its Litigation Department and Intellectual Property Group. Ms. Johnson and Ms. Thompkins joined Ballard's Washington, DC office. They will be working closely with established trademark attorneys Brian J. Winterfelt, Deepika Reddy Allana and Benita Collier.
