58 Holland & Knight Attorneys Named To Magazine's 'Florida Legal Elite'

Holland & Knight LLP has announced that 58 of the firmÆs attorneys have been named to Florida Trend magazine's 2005 Florida Legal Elite. The Florida Legal Elite are the top lawyers practicing in Florida, according to the results of the magazine's statewide attorney surveys.

Holland & Knight's Managing Partner, Howell W. Melton Jr., was also recognized as a Top Managing Partner. Additionally, six Holland & Knight lawyers were recognized as Up and Comers in the legal profession.

Holland & Knight also has announced that Janis Schiff, a partner in the firmÆs Washington, DC, office, has been appointed firm-wide marketing partner. In this role, Schiff will direct the implementation of all aspects of strategic marketing, advertising and branding for the firm.

Ms. Schiff has practiced Real Estate law since 1983 and joined Holland & Knight as a partner seven years ago. Since joining the firm, she has served in numerous leadership roles, including Chair of the Retail Development Team in the Real Estate Section; Deputy Section Leader in the firmÆs Real Esate Section since August 2003, and founder and leader of the firm's Rising Stars program. She also has served on the firm's Director's Committee since 2001.

In recognition of extraordinary pro bono contributions to the advancement of human rights and immigration and asylum law, Holland & Knight has received the 2005 Pro Bono Award from the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). The award was presented at the AILA Annual Conference In Salt Lake City, UT.

AILA presents that annual award to an individual or entity for "promoting the highest goals of professional responsibility through exemplary efforts in support of pro bono representation of indigent aliens." Holland & Knight was recognized for its advocacy in numerous proceedings, such as the successful; representation of gay asylum applicants fleeing persecution; the release of Malik Jarno, a mentally retarded orphan from Guinea; legislative advocacy on behalf of the Women's Commission for Refugee Women and Children, the Hebrew Immigrant Aids Society, the Office of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and the American Bar Association, and the launch and ongoing support of the National Center for refugee and Immigrant Children.
