The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region recently announced the first nonprofit grantees of The Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP Greater DC Community Foundation - DC SCORES and Higher Achievement Program (HAP).
DC SCORES and Higher Achievement will each receive a grant of $40,000 to support their work in youth development and academic achievement. In addition, Willkie employees will volunteer with both grantee organizations and serve on their boards.
DC SCORES bridges the academic and athletic development of nearly 700 children in 22 DC public schools and from some of the District's most impoverished neighborhoods by providing daily after-school creative writing and soccer activities throughout the school year and for five weeks in the summer. Higher Achievement develops academic skills, behaviors, and attitudes in underprivileged yet motivated DC middle school children from inner city communities. Higher Achievement seeks to improve educational opportunities through 700 hours of high level academic training annually and placement into top area high schools.
Willkie's 11-member Advisory Committee selected Higher Achievement and DC SCORES as the inaugural grantees after a rigorous review and application process that considered over 30 local nonprofits. These new community partnerships have been enthusiastically embraced by the entire Willkie firm.
The purpose of Willkie's Foundation is to support programs and educational initiatives assisting underserved youth in the greater Washington area.
