British Law Firm AllianceCited For M&A Activity

The law firm alliance Herbert Smith, Gleiss Lutz, Stibbe placed first in Mergemarket's tabulation of legal advisers for the period January 1 through March 26, advising on just under 75 billion euros worth of M&A transactions.


The alliance has advised on some of the major European M&A deals in the first quarter.


Herbert Smith had an initial role in advising Merrill Lynch, which was advising Sanofi-Synthelabo on its 53 billion euro hostile bid for Aventis.


Gleiss Lutz and Herbert Smith advised L'Air Liquide, the world's leading industrial gas manufacturer, on its acquisition of Messer Griesheim's industrial gas activities in Germany, the UK and the U.S. Herbert Smith provided UK legal advice.


Stibbe advised Braco SA, the Brazilian holding company that sold its stake in Ambev to Interbrew for just over 10 billion euros.


In addition during the quarter, Herbert Smith has advised:


•Credit Lyonnais on the disposal of Laing and Cruikshank to UBS;


•Bank of Ireland on its joint venture with the Post Office;


•Securicor on its merger with Group 4;


•CWG Acquisition in relation to Brascan's bid for Canary Wharf Group PLC;


•CPG on its partial bid for De Vere.
