Winston & Strawn has announced that James L. Malone III has joined its New York City and Chicago offices as a partner in the tax department. He focuses his practice on federal tax controversy matters.

Mr. Malone previously was a senior partner at McDermott, Will & Emery and chairman of its Tax Controversy Practice. Most recently, he served as president and general counsel of New Power Holdings, Inc., where he helped manage that company's bankruptcy and liquidation.

Mr. Malone's highly established tax practice includes the representation of clients in the airline, retail, insurance, sports and manufacturing industries, as well as estates and non-profit organizations. He has handled tax controversy matters for numerous national and international companies such as Meredith Corporation; United Airlines; Consolidated Paper Co.; Mars, Inc.; Snap-On Tools Corporation; Kraft, Inc.; Jockey International; and the estates of football magnates George Halas (Chicago Bears) and Paul Brown (Cincinnati Bengals).
