McNees attorneys Michael Doctrow and Shawn Leppo will present a webinar entitled "Understanding Trademark, Copyright and Trade Secrets Basics for Business Owners" as part of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry's Educational Series.

The webinar will take place on Thursday, March 3, 2016, from 11:00 a.m. to Noon.  Attendees of the program will receive 1 PDC for the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP; 1 hour of substantive law, practice and procedure CLE credit and 1 CPE Credit. The program is designed to help companies understand trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets, and will walk you through the basic steps to identify and safeguard those assets. 

  • What is a trademark? How to select one; how to properly use trademarks and how to protect them; how to license or assign trademark rights
  • What is a copyright? How to claim copyright protection; how to make sure you own copyrights to the creative works you acquire; the rights of the copyright owner; why and how to register copyrights; why you should use a copyright notice on your materials
  • When can you use another company's trademarks or creative works? Can you ever use another company's trade secrets?
  • How to economically defend trademarks and copyrights against infringement;
  • What is a trade secret? What are the activities or circumstances that allow a company to maintain secrecy?
  • How to protect the core of a company’s existence — its trade secrets — from misappropriation or loss of confidentiality;
  • Practical steps to take to protect your company's trademarks, copyrighted works, and trade secrets

Michael A. Doctrow is a Member with the Harrisburg-based law firm McNees Wallace & Nurick LLC, where he co-chairs the Intellectual Property group which is comprised of over 20 professionals, including 12 licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent Office. He also practices in the Food Industry group for the firm. Mike practices trademark, copyright, trade secret and advertising law. His practice focuses on trademark clearance, registration and protection, copyright protection, and advertising and branding strategies. He is involved in structuring and negotiating trademark, copyright, patent and software license agreements, entertainment contracts, franchise and distribution agreements, advertising agreements and technology contracts. He counsels clients on all aspects of domestic and international marketing and distribution mattersand is actively engaged in counseling franchise companies.

Shawn K. Leppo is a Member of the firm's Intellectual Property, Patent Division, and International Law Groups. His practice includes all aspects of intellectual property law, with a focus on litigation and counseling. Shawn assists clients in asserting and defending charges of patent, copyright, and trademark infringement in federal courts across the United States and in related mediation proceedings. 

Shawn has been named a Rising Star three times by Pennsylvania Super Lawyers. He is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, in which he actively participates in the Susquehanna Local Section.  He received his J.D. from William & Mary School of Law and his undergraduate degree from The Pennsylvania State University.  He is admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and before the Federal District Courts in Middle District of Pennsylvania; before the Federal District Courts in the Eastern and Middle Districts of Virginia, before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
