DENVER, Jan. 13, 2016 — BakerHostetler is proud to announce that Poe Leggette has been named Managing Partner of the firm’s Denver office, succeeding Managing PartnerRaymond L. Sutton Jr., who served in that role for 20 years and will continue representing tax and wealth management clients. Leggette joined the firm in 2014 as co-leader of the firm’s 80-member multidisciplinary Energy team. Prior to joining BakerHostetler, he led Norton Rose Fulbright’s Denver and Pittsburgh offices and served as regional head for that firm’s Americas energy practice. “Poe’s reputation as one of the country’s preeminent energy lawyers and his experience as a former managing partner makes him an ideal leader to continue our growth in Denver,” Sutton said. “The office is in good hands.”

Leggette, who was named a 2015 “Colorado Lawyer of the Year” by Law Week Colorado, will continue to co-lead the Energy team in addition to managing his energy practice. Under Leggette’s co-leadership, the Energy team earned the distinction as one of the top energy practices in the United States when Law360 named the team a 2015 Practice Group of the Year. Leggette has earned significant accolades for his work in the energy field, specifically as a Chambers Global and Chambers USA-ranked leader in Energy: Oil & Gas for a combined total of 10 years. For the past four consecutive years he has been recognized as a Denver Business Journal Who’s Who in Energy.

Leggette has litigated many of the leading cases concerning the development of oil and gas onshore and offshore in the last 35 years. As a former Assistant Solicitor for the U.S. Department of the Interior, Leggette has leveraged his experience as an advisor to the Bureau of Land Management and the Minerals Management Service to focus his practice on litigation, transactional work, and regulatory counseling related to oil and gas development onshore, on lands owned by the federal government, and on leases on the Outer Continental Shelf.

Leggette is also experienced in legal issues regarding ownership of mineral rights, royalty disputes, and compliance with environmental statutes. Poe advises companies in the energy industry that explore for, produce, process, and transport oil and gas.

“I feel privileged to be chosen for this crucial role that Ray Sutton has expertly filled for so many years,” said Leggette. “I look forward to bringing BakerHostetler’s outstanding resources and capabilities to help businesses in the Rocky Mountain region, particularly in the areas of energy, wealth management and tax planning, litigation, technology, and hospitality, while continuing the BakerHostetler tradition of providing superior service to our clients.”

BakerHostetler is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding this year. The firm’s Denver office was established in 1980, through a strategic combination with the oldest litigation firm in Colorado at that time. The office has 33 lawyers who handle matters in all of the firm’s five practice areas of Business, Employment, Intellectual Property, Litigation, and Tax.

Leggette received his J.D. from the University of Virginia and a B.A., magna cum laude, from Tufts University.
