Sheppard Mullin Awards Ruben Escalante Pro Bono Attorney of the Year; Expands Tax Practice with New Hires

Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP has announced that it has awarded associate Ruben Escalante the firm's 2014 Bob Gerber Pro Bono Attorney of the Year Award.  This award honors and recognizes the important community service work done by Sheppard Mullin attorneys. Mr. Escalante, a 2006 graduate of University of Southern California Law School, is based in the firm’s Orange County office and is a member of Sheppard Mullin's Labor and Employment and Business Trial practice groups. 

Partner Dan Brown, Sheppard Mullin's pro bono committee chair, commented, “Pro bono is one of the finest traditions of our profession. We are very thankful to Ruben for his dedication and hard work to grow our pro bono program. Specifically, he has given back to the community in which he resides by regularly volunteering to provide pro bono services at the Riverside Public Service Law Center’s Pro Se Clinic. Through this program, Ruben was able to serve as lead counsel in a successful trial for a very deserving client in need, and continues to identify projects that will advance his legal career and reputation.” 

Federal district court judges and the Federal Bar Association (FBA) have publicly praised Mr. Escalante’s great pro bono work, the Public Service Law Center honored him with its Equal Access to Justice Award, and he was appointed to the Board of the FBA – Inland Empire Chapter and to serve as a Ninth Circuit judicial counsel lawyer representative. 

Sheppard Mullin's Bob Gerber Pro Bono Attorney of the Year Award is the firm's highest pro bono honor and was implemented to recognize and reward the important community service work done by Sheppard Mullin attorneys. The award is named in the honor and memory of Bob Gerber, who was the founder of Sheppard Mullin’s pro bono program and its leader for over a decade.

Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP is pleased to announce the addition of a robust state and local tax practice group to its nationwide tax practice: partner Roburt J. Waldow, who joins the firm from Jones Day, and special counsel Greg Turner, most recently VP & senior tax counsel at the Council On State Taxation (COST). Mr. Waldow will be based in the firm’s Orange County office, and Mr. Turner will be based in Sacramento. 

Mr. Waldow’s practice involves a broad array of SALT-related services, regularly representing clients in controversy matters, from audit through litigation, and advising clients on transactional and planning matters. He was named the Best Lawyers' 2014 Orange County Tax Law "Lawyer of the Year," and he was selected for inclusion in the 2013, 2014 and 2015 editions of  "The Best Lawyers in America" in the practice area of tax law. Mr. Waldow is a member of the Executive Committee of the State Bar of California, Taxation Section, and a former chair of the Banking and Savings Institutions Committee of the American Bar Association Tax Section.  He has participated in the invitation-only State Bar of California, Taxation Section, Eagle Lodge West conference in 2010 (Franchise Tax Board Sessions), 2012 (State Board of Equalization Sessions), 2013 (State Board of Equalization Sessions), and 2014 (Franchise Tax Board Sessions). 

Mr. Turner brings more than twenty years of state and local tax expertise to Sheppard Mullin. As former legislative and State Board of Equalization staff, he has extensive experience and contacts in Sacramento. Mr. Turner also represented taxpayers in private practice with one of the state’s leading government law practices, whose state and local tax practice involved both administrative and judicial controversy as well as administrative, legislative and ballot measure advocacy.  In addition to working on state tax controversy and planning matters, as a registered lobbyist, his role will include assisting clients in connection with proposed legislation, regulations, and ballot measures relating to state tax and local tax.
