Jones Day Adds M&A Trio In New York And London; Firm Strengthens IP Litigation Team In Chicago; Continues Latin America Banking Expansion In Mexico City

Jones Day has announced that three partners are joining the Firm's M&A Practice in its New York and London offices. Michael McGuinness and George Flemma have joined in New York, and Benedict O'Halloran will join in London.

Mr. McGuinness arrives from the New York office of Shearman & Sterling where he was the leader of that firm's Latin America M&A practice and an elected member of its governing body, the Policy Committee. Messrs. Flemma and O'Halloran join from General Electric. Mr. Flemma most recently held the role of executive counsel - Mergers & Acquisitions, leading the worldwide transaction activity of GE Oil & Gas. Mr. O'Halloran most recently held the position of general counsel - European Transactions & United Kingdom, leading European M&A activities for GE's industrial businesses while also serving as GE's UK general counsel.

As a fluent Spanish speaker of Mexican descent, Mr. McGuinness's Latin American practice focuses on M&A transactions across the region, including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. Prior to returning to private practice in 2009, he held several prominent roles at GE, including general counsel of GE Sensing & Inspection Technologies. In addition to his Latin America work, Mr. McGuinness maintains an active cross-border M&A practice.
Prior to his leadership role at GE Oil & Gas, Mr. Flemma served as Transactions and Finance Counsel at GE Corporate. He has led all aspects of domestic and cross-border M&A transactions for GE and has significant experience with joint ventures in emerging markets, including in Africa.

During his 12 years with GE, Mr. O'Halloran has led cross-border and domestic acquisition, sale, and joint venture transactions across the breadth of GE's industrial and financial services businesses, including projects in the energy, oil & gas, security, consumer appliances, healthcare, transport, aviation, banking, leasing, insurance, and real estate sectors. This work has included projects in almost every European country, as well as the U.S., Canada, Africa, the Middle East, and India


Jones Day has announced two additions to its Chicago Office's Intellectual Property Practice. William E. Devitt has joined as a partner and Matthew J. Hertko as of counsel. They were previously partners in the Chicago office of Kirkland & Ellis. 

Mr. Devitt's trial and patent litigation practice focuses on the electrical arts, in particular wireless communications, semiconductors, data networks, storage technologies, and power equipment. He also has significant transactional experience representing and advising clients in connection with patent assertions and license negotiations and other strategic transactions involving technology and/or intellectual property rights.

Mr. Hertko is a rising star in intellectual property litigation. He has served as trial counsel for clients in the semiconductor, integrated circuit, consumer electronics, communications, automotive, business machine, nutraceutical, and liquid crystal display markets and has litigated in jurisdictions throughout the U.S., including in California, Texas and Illinois courts and before the ITC. 


Jones Day has announced that Antonio Franck, a lawyer actively engaged in the practice of corporate, banking, and securities law, is joining as a partner in the Firm's Mexico City Office. Mr. Franck will be part of Jones Day's Banking & Finance Practice and joins from the Mexico City office of Haynes & Boone. 

Mr. Franck's experience is focused on the representation of foreign commercial banks lending in Mexico, foreign and Mexican underwriters, and private sector companies. He participates in the structuring and negotiation of national and international financial transactions, mergers and acquisitions, corporate and financial restructurings, strategic associations, and business in general.

Jones Day's Mexico City Office opened in January 2009, and has since grown to more than 60 legal fee earners who provide service to domestic and international clients doing business in Mexico and throughout the world. Mr. Franck's arrival comes on the heels of several notable developments from Jones Day's Latin America/Miami Region, including advising Grupo Aeroportuario de la Ciudad de México, S.A. de C.V. in connection with the legal structure and financing of Mexico City's new international airport; relocating the Mexico City Office to the iconic Paseo de la Reforma at the end of last year; opening the Miami Office as part of a U.S. gateway to Latin America; the recent arrival of Mike McGuinness(former head of Latin American M&A at Shearman & Sterling) and Maria Luisa Canovas in New York, and the 2013 arrivals of Alejandro Chico,Antonio Gonzalez, Mauricio Llamas, Alberto de la Parra, and Hector Tinocoin Mexico City.
