On August 17, 2014, Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP firm co-chair Gary Naftalis was given the honor of reading the 1790 letter from Moses Seixas of the Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island, to President George Washington at Touro Synagogue’s annual reading of their exchange of correspondence. The Seixas letter and George Washington’s celebrated reply are generally considered to be among the foundational documents of religious liberty in the United States. For the last 67 years, Touro Synagogue – the oldest synagogue in the United States – has held an annual reading of these two historic letters. The keynote speaker at this year’s reading was Christina Hull Paxson, the President of Brown University. Keynote speakers at past readings at Touro have included Supreme Court Justices Elena Kagan and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
