Global law firm Proskauer announced today that Robert J. Kafin has been elected as chair of the Times Square Alliance. Mr. Kafin is an environmental partner and the firm’s former chief operating partner and general counsel.
Founded in 1992, The Times Square Alliance is the Business Improvement District in Manhattan covering 40th Street to 53rd Street and from Sixth to Eighth Avenues. In addition to providing core neighborhood services with its Public Safety Officers and Sanitation Associates, The Times Square Alliance promotes local businesses; encourages economic development and public improvements; co-coordinates numerous major events in Times Square (including the annual New Year's Eve and Solstice in Times Square celebrations); manages the Times Square Museum and Visitor Center; and advocates on behalf of its constituents with respect to a host of public policy, planning and quality-of-life issues.
Mr. Kafin has a long history of civic involvement and currently serves as the chair of GrowNYC, a nonprofit organization in the Office of the Mayor, also known as the Council on the Environment of New York City. GrowNYC operates 54 Greenmarkets, facilitates a community and school gardens program, provides environmental education, and staffs the Office of Recycling Outreach and Education.
He is a co-founder of the Carl Schurz Park Association, Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts and the Lower Adirondack Arts Council. Mr. Kafin has served on the boards of many charitable organizations and is a past chair of Parks & Trails NY, the Environmental Law Section of the New York State Bar Association and Citizens for Clean Air. Mr. Kafin is also a trustee of the Preservation League of New York State and a former trustee of the Emma Willard School.
