Sheppard Mullin Welcomes Lateral Hires In Shanghai And Palo Alto; Elevates 13 Attorneys To Partner

Tony K. Mou has joined Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP as a partner in the Corporate practice group and will be based in the firm's Shanghai office. Mr. Mou joins from Morgan Lewis in Beijing. 

Mr. Mou advises multinational companies operating in China in a broad range of general corporate and transactional matters. Mr. Mou focuses on representing private equity/venture capital clients, entrepreneurs, venture-backed companies as well as inbound and outbound mergers and acquisitions.  He also provides advice in the areas of foreign direct investment, foreign-exchange control, employment and international tax. Mr. Mou also assists overseas investors in setting up operations in China and acquiring local Chinese companies. 

In addition, Mr. Mou’s practice supports workforce issues related to transactional matters, including noncompetes, labor contracts, leave rights, and terminations. He also serves clients on M&A-related workforce transfer planning and negotiation.

Mr. Mou is a native Mandarin speaker. In addition to being an attorney, he is a certified public accountant (with an inactive status).

James W. Soong has joined the Palo Alto office of Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP as a partner in the firm's Intellectual Property practice group, joining from Greenberg Traurig. 

Mr. Soong's patent and intellectual property practice focuses on the technology sector. His work includes strategically developing patent portfolios and leading patent litigation matters in a wide array of technical disciplines.

“Jim’s patent expertise in the technology sector is a great fit for our rapidly expanding IP practice group. He brings a valuable range of private practice and in-house experience to Sheppard Mullin,” said Guy N. Halgren, chairman of Sheppard Mullin.

Mr. Soong regularly counsels clients – from start-ups to the Fortune 500 – regarding worldwide intellectual property strategy, including patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret portfolio procurement, management, licensing and enforcement. He frequently advises clients on patent licensing, enforcement, litigation, as well as avoidance strategies. Mr. Soong's experience includes advising on intellectual property issues that arise in licensing, standard setting organizations, mergers and acquisitions, inter-company agreements, employment and other corporate matters.  Drawing on his extensive in-house corporate experience, Mr. Soong is often called upon to provide strategic direction regarding the establishment and optimization of corporate intellectual policies and best practices. In addition to private practice, Soong led the global intellectual property strategy at Siebel Systems from 2000 to 2005.

Nate Bruno is a member of the Intellectual Property practice group and is based in the Washington, DC office.  Mr. Bruno is an IP litigator who represents innovative clients in the proactive protection of their inventions, creative content, brands, and strategic business advantages.

Michael Chan is a member of the Tax, Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation practice group in the Los Angeles office.  Mr. Chan counsels employers with respect to the design, administration and legal compliance of qualified retirement plans. 

Paul Cowie is a member of the Labor and Employment practice group and is based in the Palo Alto office.  Mr. Cowie represents employers in the full range of employment matters, with his focus on litigation and class actions. 

David Gallacher is a member of the Government Contracts, International Trade and Investigations practice group in the Washington, DC office.  Mr. Gallacher's professional experience involves a wide variety of litigation, administrative, and counseling issues related to federal procurement laws. 

Michael Gibson is a member of the Real Estate, Land Use and Environmental practice group in the Washington, DC office.  He has experience in real property purchase and sale, leasing, licensing and financing transactions.  

David Hengstler is a member of the Finance and Bankruptcy practice group in the Orange County office.  Mr. Hengstler specializes in real estate, secured and unsecured lending transactions, complex workouts, and enforcement of creditor's rights and remedies.

Meredith Jones-McKeown is a member of the Business Trial practice group and is based in the San Francisco office.  Ms. Jones-McKeown specializes in construction, environmental, government contracts and real estate litigation and transactions.

Daniel Kloke is a member of the Intellectual Property practice group in the Palo Alto office.  Mr. Kloke specializes in intellectual property law with an emphasis on patent prosecution, strategic patent counseling, patent litigation, drafting and negotiating intellectual property licensing agreements, and counseling on open source as well as standards-setting issues.

Mike Leake is a member of the Real Estate, Land Use and Environmental practice group in the San Diego office.  Mr. Leake has a broad-based real estate transactional practice with experience in real property purchase and sale, leasing and financing.

Michael Orlando is a member of the Corporate and Intellectual Property practice groups in the Del Mar office.  Mr. Orlando advises clients on corporate law, venture capital financing, mergers & acquisitions, intellectual property licensing and other commercial transactions.

Jason Schendel is a member of the Corporate practice group in the Palo Alto office.  Mr. Schendel's practice focuses on advising public and private companies in mergers & acquisitions, securities offerings, corporate governance, SEC reporting, and general corporate matters.

Babak Yousefzadeh is a member of the firm's Labor and Employment practice group in the San Francisco office.  Mr. Yousefzadeh represents employers in a full range of employment law matters, with a focus on litigation and class actions.  He also specializes in litigation avoidance counseling.
