Akin Gump Named To National Law Journal’s Appellate Hot List

Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP has been named to The National Law Journal’s Appellate Hot List for the fifth-straight year. The list highlights law firms that are “turning in the most exemplary, cutting-edge advocacy” before the U.S. Supreme Court and other federal and state appellate courts across the country.

NLJ noted that Akin Gump had a “good year on both coasts.”  Patricia Millett, co-leader of Akin Gump’s Supreme Court and appellate practice, argued her 31st case before the U.S. Supreme Court on April 24 – more than any other woman in history. The same month, practice group co-leader Rex Heinke won a key California Supreme Court ruling in Brinker Restaurant Corp. v. Superior Court that clarified the state’s law requiring employers to give their workers meal breaks.

The awards recognize “the achievements of women leading the field in the legal sector across the Americas,” and are determined based on interviews with hundreds of lawyers and legal experts.

Kelli L. Moll has joined the firm as a partner and will lead Akin Gump’s well-respected hedge fund practice in New York. Previously, she was a partner in the New York office of Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP.

Ms. Moll has extensive experience representing investment managers in all aspects of their business, focusing primarily on hedge fund and private equity fund formation, regulatory advice, seed capital arrangements and partnership arrangements among principals.

Ms. Moll’s arrival follows the firm’s recent announcement that two leading partners, Tim Pearce and Ian Meade, would be joining the firm’s investment funds practice in London from Simmons & Simmons.

Akin Gump chairman R. Bruce McLean said, “We recognize that the funds market is continually evolving, and the firm is committed to providing our clients with the counsel and knowledge they need to be successful. With Kelli, we’re adding a highly regarded lawyer with a great track record of success and an enormous depth of experience—she’ll be an excellent addition to a leading funds team that already contains a deep bench of talented lawyers.”

Investment funds practice co-leader Stephen Vine added, “I’m very proud of the success we’ve had building a top-notch funds practice both in the U.S. and globally, and Kelli’s arrival continues that trend. The depth of her knowledge of investment funds coupled with her keen business sense will make Kelli an ideal fit for our practice and a tremendous resource for our clients.”

“Joining Akin Gump’s funds team is a tremendous opportunity for me, personally,” stated Ms. Moll, “and I expect that clients will see the benefit of having not only the firm’s long tradition of funds experience in their corner, but also access to its impressive global platform. I especially look forward to my leadership role in further expanding the firm’s impressive hedge fund practice.”
