The Honorable John J. Gibbons, director of the John J. Gibbons Fellowship in Public Interest & Constitutional Law at Gibbons P.C., was awarded the Alan V. and Amy Lowenstein Social Justice Award at the Annual New Jersey Institute of Social Justice Awards Gala. The program was produced by the New Jersey Institute of Social Justice and took place on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Nanina’s in the Park in Belleville, New Jersey.
Judge Gibbons, who is renowned for a long list of achievements and landmark decisions, was honored for both his legal experience and community service.Previously Chief Judge of the Third U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, he has committed his 60-year career to protecting the rule of law in this country, a commitment that led to his momentous defense of the 660 men incarcerated at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. Judge Gibbons also founded and currently directs his firm’s Gibbons Fellowship, a unique public service program through which three Gibbons attorneys undertake public interest and constitutional law projects and litigation in a variety of areas, representing public interest organizations, government agencies, private nonprofit corporations, courts, and individuals. Under his direction, the Fellowship has been involved today’s most significant and controversial issues confronting federal and state courts.
