King & Spalding Expands Litigation Practice With Additions Of David Balser And Larry Slovensky

David L. Balser, one of the leading trial lawyers in the southeast United States, and Lawrence A. Slovensky, a prominent litigator, have joined the business litigation practice of King & Spalding as partners in the Atlanta, GA office, the firm announced today. Their arrival continues the strategic global expansion of the firm’s litigation practice, bringing the total number of lateral litigation partners who have joined the firm in the past 24 months to 21. 

Mr. Balser represents Fortune 500 companies, privately held businesses, corporate officers and directors, and law firms in trials, arbitrations and appeals in complex business litigation matters throughout the United States. He represents both plaintiffs and defendants, and many of the cases he handles involve matters of significant strategic importance to his clients. A fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, he has been identified as one of "America's Leading Lawyers" for litigation by Chambers USA and was named by Georgia Trend magazine as one of "Georgia's Most Effective Lawyers" for business litigation. 

Mr. Slovensky focuses on class action defense, law firm defense and general commercial litigation. Earlier in his career, he spent five years with EarthLink, Inc., where he managed all of the company’s litigation.

Three King & Spalding partners have been recognized for providing the most outstanding client service by corporate counsel at large and Fortune 1000 companies, according to BTI Consulting Group’s 2012 Client Service All-Stars survey published this week. They are E. William Bates, II, Richard A. Cirillo and Chilton Davis Varner. Only 24 of the 169 firms represented in this year’s survey had three or more “all-stars.”

Mr. Bates is a partner in the New York corporate practice group of King & Spalding and is co-head of the firm’s mergers and acquisitions practice. He represents buyers and sellers in mergers, stock and cash acquisition transactions and advises clients on corporate and governance matters, such as the application by boards of directors of their fiduciary, joint ventures and strategic alliances.

Mr. Cirillo is a commercial litigation partner in the firm’s New York office, with extensive experience in securities, antitrust, healthcare and contract matters. He focuses on trials and arbitrations before domestic and international courts and tribunals, many brought as class actions or as derivative (or double derivative) actions, as well as governmental regulatory and enforcement proceedings.

Ms. Varner is a partner in King & Spalding’s Atlanta product liability practice. She has 30 years of courtroom experience as a trial lawyer defending corporations in product liability, business torts, contract and other commercial disputes. She has been identified by the National Law Journal as one of the top 10 women litigators in the United States, and Chambers USA continually has named her as one of the best U.S. product liability lawyers. Ms. Varner has served as trial and appellate counsel for a number of the largest U.S. pharmaceutical, medical device and automotive manufacturers.

Jason E. Keehfus, a trial lawyer specializing in tobacco litigation, has joined the product liability practice of King & Spalding as a counsel in the Atlanta office, the firm announced today. 

Mr. Keehfus focuses on the defense of individual and class action product liability lawsuits, with particular expertise in tobacco litigation. He has been a member of the national defense team in a number of smoking and health lawsuits, and he has substantial experience preparing and participating in trials of Engleprogeny cases.

King & Spalding increased its presence in the Middle East with the addition of two lawyers to its offices in Riyadh (affiliate office) and Abu Dhabi. They are counsel Mohammed Javid Shafi in Riyadh and senior associate Simon Rahimzada in Abu Dhabi. Their arrival adds to King & Spalding’s strength in the areas of Islamic finance, real estate finance, corporate finance, restructuring, real estate, capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, and joint ventures.

Mr. Shafi is qualified in England and Wales. He has over 10 years’ experience advising borrowers and lenders on banking and financing transactions, with particular expertise in real estate finance, syndicated loans, acquisitions, securitizations, structured finance and restructuring of security on behalf of lenders.  

Mr. Rahimzada is qualified in England and Wales. He has experience in cross-border acquisitions, joint ventures and corporate restructurings, especially in the energy sector. He also has worked on capital markets deals for domestic and international clients.
