Kim Koopersmith, U.S. managing partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, has been named by InsideCounsel magazine as the recipient of the 2011 Thomas A. Mars Pathmaker Award.
The award, named for the executive vice president and chief administrative officer of Walmart U.S., recognizes a law firm managing partner or law firm senior leader "whose courage, unyielding vision, integrity, conviction and authenticity has carved a groundbreaking path and laid a new foundation to accelerate the economic empowerment of attorneys of color or women in law firms."
Ms. Koopersmith said, "I am humbled to receive this award, particularly because it celebrates the tremendous accomplishments of Walmart's Tom Mars. His commitment to diversity and inclusiveness sets the bar high for all of us who work to ensure the recruitment, retention and promotion of women and minorities in the legal profession."
The Thomas A. Mars Pathmaker Award is one of several Transformative Leadership Awards to be presented to female legal industry leaders on May 24, 2011, in Chicago.
The American Lawyer has named corporate partner Kerry E. Berchem of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP as one of "the best young women lawyers in The Am Law 200."
In choosing its list of 45 "remarkable women lawyers" under the age of 45 who "have already built stellar reputations in their practice areas," the magazine sought women "leading billion-dollar deals or financings, first-chairing high-stakes litigation, arguing appeals, or managing important firm clients."
A co-leader of Akin Gump's corporate practice and a member of the firm's management committee, Ms. Berchem advises companies' boards of directors and private equity and hedge funds on mergers, acquisitions and private equity investments; capital markets transactions; corporate governance matters; and reorganizations and recapitalizations.
