Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP was named the winner of the Global Competition Review's 2011 M&A Transaction of the Year Award, Europe, for its work on the Sanofi-Aventis joint venture with Merck. Weil represented Sanofi-Aventis SA of France in its decision to combine its animal health business, Merial, with Intervet/Schering-Plough, Merck & Co.'s counterpart. The joint venture, which was announced in early 2010, follows Sanofi-Aventis' $4 billion acquisition of Merck's 50 percent interest in Merial Limited in 2009.
The Weil team representing Sanofi-Aventis was led by partners Helene Jaffe and John Scribner, with associates Marie Mathews, Brianne Kucerik and Caitlin Somerman. The attorneys are based in the firm's New York and Washington, DC offices.
Weil, Gotshal & Manges secured another major win on behalf of client Specialized Technology Resources, Inc. (STR), this time in the relief phase of its 2009 state court trial victory against JPS Elastomerics Corp. (JPS). The litigation extends back to October 2007. The successful relief phase of the case follows on equally successful representations for STR at trial in state court (2009) and during pre-trial in federal district court (January 2011), where Weil recently won a motion to dismiss a related antitrust litigation brought by JPS.
The Weil team was led by New York Litigation partner Bruce S. Meyer and included Boston counsel Patrick J. O'Toole and associate Brandon Miller.
