Akin Gump Opens Geneva Office; Pro Bono Practice Leader Steven H. Schulman Honored

Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is pleased to announce the opening of a new office in Geneva, Switzerland.

Charles C. Adams Jr. heads the new office and will be joined by partners Jonathan Ivinson and Michael J. Stepek, along with a team of four other lawyers.The office has extensive experience in the prosecution and defense of major claims brought in international arbitrations, international civil litigation matters before various national and international courts and institutions, corporate and commercial law, and tax optimization for multinational corporates and high-net-worth individuals. The group joins Akin Gump from Hogan & Hartson.

Akin Gump's Geneva office will be located at 3, rue François Bellot, 1206 Geneva, Switzerland.

The Institute of International Education (IIE) is pleased to honor Steven H. Schulman, partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, with the 2010 'Award for Extraordinary Service' for the generous support and counsel he has provided to the Scholar Rescue Fund (SRF).

To date, the Scholar Rescue Fund has assisted more than 350 threatened scholars from 43 countries by providing life- and career-saving grants and professional networking assistance to return scholars to safe and productive academic positions at partnering host institutions throughout the world. In most cases, scholars have escaped attempts on their lives, prolonged detention, or physical and psychological abuse.

Mr. Schulman leads Akin Gump's pro bono operations worldwide, representing some of the most vulnerable communities and individuals, and extends his passion and counsel to organizations whose mission is to do the same. Over the past three years, he has advised IIE and SRF on serious programmatic issues and has led a powerful team to provide legal counsel for scholars who are faced with the difficult decision to apply for asylum in the United States. Scholars from Iraq, Sri Lanka, Iran, Gaza and Ethiopia describe with deep gratitude the extensive care from Mr. Schulman and his team.

Chadi A. Salloum has joined Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP in Abu Dhabi as a partner in the corporate practice.

Mr. Salloum represents sovereign entities, multinational companies and financial institutions on a broad range of transactions, including mergers and acquisitions; joint ventures; restructurings; private equity matters; privatizations; spinoffs; strategic alliances; tender offers; initial public offerings; rights offerings; and private placements of equity, equity-linked and debt securities.In addition, Mr. Salloum advises clients with respect to compliance matters and reporting obligations.

A fluent Arabic speaker, Mr. Salloum joins the firm from Chiomenti Studio Legale in Rome, where he was international legal counsel.Previously, he was an attorney with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP in New York.

Cono A. Carrano has joined Akin Gump as a partner in the intellectual property practice. Mr. Carrano is a registered patent attorney who focuses his practice on complex patent litigation. His litigation experience primarily involves semiconductors, electronics, software, wireless and optics technology. He represents clients before the U.S. District Courts, the International Trade Commission and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He has also worked extensively with patent trial counsel in Europe and Asia.
