Akin Gump Enhances International Arbitration And Tax Practices

Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is pleased to the opening of a new office in Geneva, Switzerland.

Charles C. Adams Jr. heads the new office and will be joined by partners Jonathan Ivinson and Michael J. Stepek, along with a team of four other lawyers.

With more than 35 years of experience in international law, Mr. Adams focuses primarily on complex, high-value international disputes involving major infrastructure construction projects, joint ventures, insurance coverage, manufacturing, telecommunications and transportation.

Mr. Stepek's practice encompasses international arbitration, international public and private law, and trade, with a particular focus on disputes involving foreign direct investment; concession agreements; major infrastructure construction projects; and joint ventures in the petroleum, power generation, telecommunications and transportation industries.

Mr. Ivinson's practice focuses on international and domestic tax issues, with an emphasis on tax-efficient cross-border financing structures. Mr. Ivinson advises multinational corporations on the tax-efficient structuring of their international operations and transfer pricing issues, as well as on value-added tax (VAT) and customs duties.

Akin Gump's Geneva office will be located at 3, rue François Bellot, 1206 Geneva, Switzerland.

Philip Nowak of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP has been named a "Groundbreaking Lawyer" in both mergers and acquisitions and litigation work by Public Utilities Fortnightly, an online and monthly print publication for management at utility and energy companies, consulting firms and those in the legal and financial communities who focus on the power industry.

In its "2009 Groundbreaking Law And Lawyers Report," the publication released the results of an online survey of in-house counsel at utilities, public utility commissions and trade associations to develop the first-ever hotlist of "Groundbreaking Lawyers," which includes just 35 U.S. lawyers practicing in diverse areas ranging from mergers and acquisitions and litigation to renewable energy and clean air compliance.

Mr. Nowak heads the firm's energy regulatory practice, and his transaction experience includes representing energy companies, investment and private equity funds, and electric utilities in purchase and sale, merger, and investment transactions in the electric power sector.

Cono A. Carrano has joined Akin Gump as a partner in the intellectual property practice. Mr. Carrano is a registered patent attorney who focuses his practice on complex patent litigation. He represents clients before the U.S. District Courts, the International Trade Commission and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He has also worked extensively with patent trial counsel in Europe and Asia.
