The Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia (HBA-DC) has named Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP as the recipient of its 2008 Leadership in Diversity Award.

The award, presented annually, recognizes the D.C. metro-area employer that has shown "a commitment and success rate in recruiting and retaining Hispanic professionals" and has served as "a role model for other legal employers who are looking to implement and improve diversity in the workplace." The award recipient is selected based on the results of the HBA-DC's diversity survey, which solicits information about employers' diversity programs and practices and then evaluates each employer's engagement in efforts to meet the needs of Hispanic attorneys.

John F. Sopko, a veteran of decades of congressional investigations and most recently the chief counsel for oversight and investigations at the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has joined Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP as a partner in Washington, D.C. Mr. Sopko will focus on congressional and federal investigations as a senior member of the public law and policy practice.

Mr. Sopko's experience as a senior congressional investigative counsel includes his 15-year tenure as the deputy chief counsel to the U.S. Senate's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations as well as service as the Democratic general counsel and chief of investigations for the U.S. House Select Committee on Homeland Security.
