Legal Times has named Robert S. Strauss and Thomas C. Goldstein of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP to its list of The 90 Greatest Washington Lawyers of the Last 30 Years. Messrs. Strauss and Goldstein were recognized as "visionaries," lawyers whose "foresight and hard work have changed the business of law in Washington."
Ambassador Strauss was "among the first to understand" the nexus between government, policy and business. He opened Akin Gump's small Washington office in 1971 which, in one generation, has grown to more than 1,000 lawyers. Ambassador Strauss served as President Jimmy Carter's special representative to the Middle East Peace Negotiations, and later as both the last ambassador to the Soviet Union and the first ambassador to Russia under President George H.W. Bush.
Mr. Goldstein was noted for launching the first clinic focusing on high-court litigation at Stanford Law School - a model that has since been adopted by six other law schools. Mr. Goldstein serves as co-head of Akin Gump's Supreme Court practice and head of its Washington litigation practice.
Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., Edward F. Fernandes and Prakash H. Mehta of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP have been named to The National Law Journal's list of The 50 Most Influential Minority Lawyers in America.
In compiling its list, the NLJ sought out lawyers "who have had a national impact in their legal fields and beyond during the past five years." Specifically, the publication looked for those "who have demonstrated the power to change the law, shape public affairs, launch industries and get big things done."
