Letter From The President Of The Georgia Chapter Of The Association Of Corporate Counsel America

2005-02-01 01:00

To The Readers Of The Metropolitan Corporate Counsel:

We've just begun an exciting new year for ACC's Georgia Chapter. We assembled an impressive in-house panel at our January 11 membership meeting to introduce (or re-introduce) in-house counsel to ACC. Jim Merklinger, Managing Attorney from the ACC national office, provided a live demonstration of legal resources on ACC's website, paying particular attention to corporate counsel attorney client privilege and other issues.Local chapter member Stacey Geer, Chief Securities Counsel for BellSouth Corporation, discussed the value in general of ACC's legal practice committees, and described in particular how her leadership activities within the ACC Corporate & Securities Law Committee adds value to her practice.Chapter Vice President Teresa Kennedy, Assistant General Counsel for Cox Communications, described her role on The ACC Docket Advisory Board, and how her teaching and writing efforts with ACC have similarly enhanced her legal practice.

In addition, our chapter welcomed Vince Gonzalez, President of the ACC Southern California Chapter, who gave us a glimpse of the programs and activities of another large, geographically dispersed ACC chapter. Vince's presentation provided our membership, and the Chapter Board of Directors, with much food for thought even as Maggiano's kitchens ensured a bountiful repast.

The chapter also recognized the superb leadership of our immediate past president, Mary Ulmer Jones. Under Mary's guidance we added more members than any other large ACC chapter, sharing honors for this feat with our small chapter neighbor to the north (Tennessee) at the ACC National Meeting in October. We also began important processes of diversifying programming and working on sponsorship options. We presented Mary with a Movado wall clock and plaque marking her leadership term as a tangible expression of our gratitude, as well as with a cash donation in Mary's honor to the South Asia Relief Fund administered by the Episcopal Relief and Development Organization (Mary is active in All Saints Parish in Atlanta) as a fitting and personalized tribute to her sense of service in order to aid Tsunami-related relief efforts in that region.

We have a number of local chapter events in February that you won't want to miss. At our regular membership meeting on February 8, Lex Mundi, through local affiliate Alston & Bird, LLC, will present an in-house counsel panel on the topic "Finding and Managing Foreign Counsel."

On February 17 the North Fulton based law firm of Marshall & Lueder, LLC, will sponsor a lunch program for in-house counsel in the northern arc on the topic, "Joint Ventures and the Use of LLCs to Structure Them."

The YLC committee has organized a sponsored wine tasting event for in-house lawyers in Georgia who have practiced law for less than 15 years. The event takes place on February 16.

For registration fees and other information about these and other upcoming programs, visit our chapter's web page at www.acca.com.

Sincerely,

Theodore Reynolds Kingsley
