Letter From The President Of The South Florida Chapter Of The Association Of Corporate Counsel - America

2004-10-01 00:00

To The Readers Of The Metropolitan Corporate Counsel:

Now is the time for our membership to assist the elderly, the children, the "working poor," and low-income families who have been devastated by Hurricane Frances.

ACC South FL is assisting in a unique way with the Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County (additional county legal aid societies may be added as contacts and arrangements are made).

Certain corporate counsel may be limited by rule from participating in traditional pro bono efforts; however, in this regard a number of innovative and creative methods for providing pro bono services have been developed to answer the needs of our needy and our area corporate counsel.

ACC and Legal Aid need your assistance with the continuing flow of requests for legal assistance by participating in Client Screening. Through Client Screening, corporate counsel often find this volunteer activity attractive because it offers a definite time period for their volunteer work, unlike open-ended case referrals.

Priority for this program is given to in-house corporate counsel. Volunteer attorneys spend a morning or afternoon at Legal Aid's office interviewing prospective clients and preparing cases for referral to Legal Aid's Pro Bono Project. The interviewing sites are typically in West Palm Beach, Delray Beach or Belle Glade, but additional sites may be designated due to the nature of the recovery efforts. Legal Aid staff is on hand in the event you may encounter difficult situations.

To participate contact Claudette Patton at (561) 254-0450 to indicate your availability. Then, contact Kimberly Rommel-Enright, Esq., Pro Bono Coordinator with the Legal Aid Society, by completing the Participation Form at the website below. On the form, please indicate you are Corporate Counsel and that you are interested in Client Screening. Staff from the Legal Aid Society will contact you directly regarding the Client Screening Program with times and dates.

The form and additional project information is available at www.legalaidpbc.org. Fax the form to Kim's attention at (561) 655-5269 and/or mail it to Kimberly Rommel-Enright, Esq., Pro Bono Coordinator, Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County, 423 Fern Street, Suite 200, West Palm Beach, FL 33401. The telephone number for the Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County is (561) 655-8944.

On behalf of the children, elderly and low-income families, I want to thank you in advance for your participation.

Sincerely, Arlene Finkelstein
