To The Readers Of The Metropolitan Corporate Counsel:
It’s my privilege to serve this year as president of DELVACCA, one of the Association of Corporate Counsel’s premier chapters. We’re proud to have received ACC’s prestigious Large Chapter of the Year Award in 2008, 2010, and 2012. With approximately 1,300 members in eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and Delaware, DELVACCA serves as the in-house bar association for lawyers practicing in the legal departments of companies and other private sector organizations throughout the Delaware Valley region.
In 2014, DELVACCA has continued to provide great CLE programs designed to meet the needs and interests of the in-house bar. In addition to our monthly substantive law programs and practice group roundtable series, on April 3, more than 400 people attended our Sixth Annual In-House Counsel Conference, which offered 24 program choices during six one-hour sessions and networking opportunities during breakfast, lunch, and a post-conference cocktail reception. The Counsel Conference provided a great way to get up to six CLE credits from programs specifically tailored for in-house lawyers, free to our members.
In March, DELVACCA members from over 22 companies facilitated our third Street Law Program. The attorneys ran interactive sessions in the areas of human resources, contract, and intellectual property law for seniors from South Philadelphia High School. These sessions included mock negotiations and trials, affording students an opportunity to argue and defend cases and to serve as mediators and judges. Our members also provided insights into legal careers to the students.
DELVACCA is again proud to sponsor its Diversity Corporate Summer Internship Program. Now in its seventh year, this program is aimed at increasing ethnic and racial diversity within corporate legal departments by matching them with student interns who are members of minority groups traditionally underrepresented in the legal profession. In addition, the program provides an opportunity for interaction between DELVACCA and the law schools in our area. In 2011, DELVACCA received the Innovator Award from the Minority Corporate Counsel Association, which recognized the value of this program and its contribution to the enhancement of the in-house professional community. With a strong group of student applicants and several participating companies, we’re looking forward to another successful internship program in 2014.
DELVACCA members are known to enjoy the myriad networking activities the Chapter offers throughout the year. One of our most popular networking events is our Spring Fling, which is held annually at a local cultural institution. In May 2014, Spring Fling will at The Barnes Foundation, which holds one of the finest collections of Post-Impressionist and early Modern paintings and is one of Philadelphia’s premier cultural venues.
It’s an honor to work with DELVACCA’s fantastic officers, board members, chapter administrator, and sponsors. We look forward to continuing the Chapter’s growth and success throughout the rest of 2014. Please visit DELVACCA’s website (http://www.acc.com/chapters/del/) to learn more about the Chapter.
