To The Readers Of The Metropolitan Corporate Counsel:
The Research Triangle Area Chapter of ACC North Carolina was started in 2004 by Brian Klemm, senior counsel and corporate compliance officer, SAS and Marvin Genzer, retired general counsel, EDO Corporation and current adjunct professor at North Carolina Central University Law School. From our beginning as a chapter in 2004 with about 120 members, we now have over 350 members with one of the highest growth and retention rates in the country. Our members represent over 125 different companies – small to mid-sized to Fortune 500 – from Greensboro to Wilmington, North Carolina. The highest concentration of members is in the greater Research Triangle area.
For the calendar year 2013, we have 13 CLE events scheduled as well as our annual “Contracts 101” mini-course for non-lawyers. Our typical attendance at these presentations has averaged approximately 60 participants. Each of the CLE programs is free to all chapter members, area law students and area law school faculty. For the past two years, the chapter has sponsored a scholarship program available to law schools at Campbell, Duke, Elon, North Carolina Central and UNC-Chapel Hill. For each of these two years, the chapter has awarded five winners with a $1,000 tuition assistance check. Further, chapter members actively participate with the local law schools on various panel discussions involving the legal practice of in-house counsel. Other community activities include a pro bono reception to give chapter members an opportunity to interact with representatives of local non-profits.
This year’s chapter social events include our popular family events such as Family Night at the Durham Bulls baseball park (August 9) and Family Night with the Carolina Ballet (April 17). Our chapter will also heavily subsidize an annual Chapter Dinner for members (November 8).
In addition, we hold two social events open to our supporting law firms and legal services providers. The first is our annual Spring Reception at An Restuarant (May 1), and the second is our annual Fall Reception at Prestonwood Country Club (October 1). Each of these strictly social gatherings features a two-hour open bar and delicious hors d’oeuvres.
We are proud of what we have accomplished in less than ten years. Our success has been due in large part to our participating law firms and legal services providers who provide generous support for our programming. We are also grateful for the passion and tireless efforts of our executive director, Marvin Genzer. We look forward to offering more value to all of our members as we continue to grow.
