To The Readers Of The Metropolitan Corporate Counsel:
As the law firm paradigm begins to shift, the role of the in-house lawyer continues to grow in prominence. Driven by the demands of the in-house practitioner, meaningful changes have been made to the legal profession, including flat fee billing (thanks in part to the ACC Value challenge) and the incorporation of practical curricula to legal education, to name a couple. In addition to the many contributions of the in-house bar, corporate counsel continue to face many pressures including increased workloads with static resources, pressure to do more work internally and increased governmental regulation adding additional burdens to our day-to-day practice.
As incoming president of the Greater New York Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC-GNY), I lead a board with an ambitious agenda to continue to serve and enhance the education and professional development of our members. We are a chapter of over 1,500 in-house lawyers and represent the interests of the in-house bar of the greater New York area. Our board represents an impressive cross-section of public, private and not-for-profit companies such as Thomson Reuters, Coby Electronics, American Stock Transfer & Trust Company, Morgan Stanley, Elizabeth Arden, Chanel and New York University.
Our membership is as diverse as New York City itself and includes both junior and senior practitioners from Fortune 500 to private companies and both large and small legal departments. Our committees are organized around major practice areas of our members and include Advertising, Employment Law, Intellectual Property Management, Retail Law, Compliance & Ethics, Non-Profit Organizations and Real Estate. Additionally, we have specialty committees for Chief Legal Officers, New to In-House, Members in Transition and a group for our Long Island members.
A key theme for the upcoming year is developing a greater sense of community among our members. We will encourage our members to seek each other out for guidance, mentor new to in-house practitioners, hire our members in transition and seek pro-bono opportunities. To support our community-building efforts, we will be rolling out several new affinity groups to encourage more interaction between our members. Two highly anticipated groups that will be rolled out shortly are a Corporate and Securities group and a Women’s group. As our chapter continues to grow, we intend to survey our membership and seek their input on ways we can add value and enhance their membership experience.
As we enter our 2012-13 term, the Board will be actively monitoring the legal landscape to ensure that our programming reflects the most timely and meaningful topics facing our members.
