To The Readers of The Metropolitan Corporate Counsel:
I am mid-way through my presidency of the ACC Chicago Chapter, and I can’t believe how fast the year is flying by! As president, I have had the opportunity to meet so many members that I hadn’t met before, and it’s exciting to see how enthusiastic they are about ACC Chicago. Since my term began in October, we have been able to provide terrific CLEs on topics ranging from real estate, data privacy, intellectual property, employee mobility issues and contract negotiations. We are privileged to work with an amazing group of sponsors that continue to provide our members with high-quality and timely CLEs, and it is through their sponsorship that we are able to provide other activities and programming for our members, such as the CLO Club. This is a group solely open to chief legal officers and focuses on the unique issues that they face in that role. We recently hosted our first CLO group meeting at which CLOs from across the Chicagoland area met and discussed an important issue they face every day: Wearing 2 Hats—being a Corporate Leader as well as the GC. The members are currently working to plan the next meeting and are welcoming new fellow CLOs to participate.
This year marked the sixth year for our Street Law program, a community outreach initiative that brings in-house counsel into underserved high schools. We recently held the end-of-the-year conferences for both the Chicago and U-46 District components. Through both programs we were able to reach nine high schools and almost 300 students who have expressed an interest in the field of law. The program enjoys continued success due to the drive and passion of our wonderful members. This year we had over 90 volunteers representing more than 60 corporations from across the Chicagoland area.
The summer looks to be a busy one. On June 12 we’ll be hosting our GC Forum, on July 13 the Clinic in a Box pro-bono opportunity, and more terrific CLE programming will continue to be offered each month. Our Diversity Law Student Summer Internship Program is just kicking off. This is our ninth year for the program, and this year we have 15 interns, who have just completed their first year of law school at one of Illinois’ law schools and who through the internship program will have the opportunity to intern at one of 12 different ACC member companies and receive mentoring by our member volunteers.
Finally, my tenure as president will conclude with our Annual In-House Celebration Dinner, which is scheduled for Wednesday, September 12. I am so excited to announce this year’s speaker: Cokie Roberts. This is our keystone event of the year and as always promises to bring a great time of fellowship for our members.
