James R. Silkenat is the president-elect designate of the 400,000 member American Bar Association, and will become president-elect of the Association in August 2012 and president of the Association in August 2013. From 1989-1990, Mr. Silkenat served as chair of the ABA Section of International Law. He is a partner in the Corporate Department of Sullivan & Worcester's New York office. His primary focus is on international joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, privatizations, project finance transactions (in developed and developing countries) and private equity investment funds. Mr. Silkenat is a director of the World Justice Project, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and of the American Law Institute, has served as a fellow in the U.S. State Department Scholar/Diplomat Program, and was a fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities. He is also a Life fellow of the American Bar Foundation and has served as national chair of the Fellows.
In 2000, he received the Outstanding Alumni Award for Career Achievement from Drury University and in 2007 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Section of International Law. In 2009 he received the Diversity Champion Award of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.
