On Friday, January 20, the Westchester Southern Connecticut Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel will present Buyer Beware: How to Avoid the Legal Traps of Hiring and On-Boarding. It starts at 8:30 and ends at 11:00 a.m. at Indian Harbor Yacht Club, 710 Steamboat Road in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Many employers do not appreciate the legal risks inherent in the hiring process. However, from the application through the on-boarding process, there are potential legal pitfalls at every turn. In addition, newly enacted city, state and federal laws have made the process more complicated.

This in-depth seminar will cover new court decisions and statutes in this area. The presenters will offer practical advice for hiring efficiently and without risk. Among other topics, attendees will learn appropriate inquiries for applicants pre- and post-offer; permissible and impermissible uses of background checks, including criminal record and credit history checks; the use of social media in hiring; conducting legal medical and psychological exams of applicants; and requirements to accommodate disabled candidates.

The speakers are Erica Chmielewski, legal counsel, Terex Corporation; Robin Frederick and Eric Lubochinski, Shipman and Goodwin; and Daniel Hewitt, director, Legal Affairs, United Rentals and chair, WESFACCA Employment Labor & Benefits Law Committee.
